Hallo, What's This? A Hobbit Christmas in the Mitt

Session #3: Christmas Day, 2012
Same d&d time, same d&d table..

Session #3

One year later, the adventure is resumed…

The party confers with Clarice about the crystal. She wants them to take it to a trusted associate named Lwaxanna, who they can find in or near the village Sweed. They begin their journey, heading south down the road.

The bard Shlackton examines some of their treasure from the previous adventure. He identifies Sparkles’ Snake Figurine, revealing one its 2 powers: when “Alla Talla” is spoken, the figurine becomes a magic weapon with the chance of poisoning its target. He also reveals the elf Elkin’s special darts to be Darts of Electricity (bonus electricity damage). And his Magic Harp is a Harp of Charming, with the power to cast Suggestion to one enemy each round.

Along the road they meet travelers heading north. A gnome merchant and his wife chat with Sparkles for awhile about recent activities. Dragons have been sighted. Bizarre storms are ravaging the southern coast.

During the night Elkin overhears travelers on the road and spies a fancy carriage, protected by knights on horseback. A regal woman shouts at her knights to investigate, but Elkin is spared.

In the morning, they witness a pig being chased through the woods. He looks at the PCs, and says “help me!”, just as 3 orcs burst through the trees. The party easily dispatches the orcs. The pig says his name is Fughton, and asks for help being restored to his humanoid form. His master, a great mage, lives in a tower nearby. The PCs accept the Quest.

The party reaches a crossroads, marked by a large statue. The 9’ tall statue is mounted on a low pedestal overrun with moss. It looks ancient.

Fughton the Pig tells them to take the road heading east into the foothills. The cleric Arno isn’t sure this quest is worth their time, and casts a spell to ascertain’s its value. “Some risk, some rewards” is gleaned. They decide to carry on.

(more to come…)

Session #2: Christmas Day, 2011
All I want for Christmas is Level 2!

Session #2

This is where the party really got underway. In the first session the characters were introduced, and the players decided that their PCs were already acquainted with each other. For whatever reason, they found themselves traveling down a seldom-used country road. They heard shouting, and sounds of fighting. A farm was under attack by goblins! The PCs saved the farmers, and met Clarice, who asked them to help her recover an heirloom stolen by the goblins. They agreed. That was session #1.

Next day: The PCs tracked the goblins to a cave. They explored the entrance and were attacked by unseen assailants. The PCs ran deeper into the cave until they found themselves in a room where a couple monsters were chained to the wall. Bugbears! The chains withdrew, and the bugbears attacked.

After slaying the bugbears, the party entered a larger cavern, where a goblin wearing a crown was shouting orders. They defeated him, and the rest scattered. Searching behind a throne, they discovered a secret passage. This eventually led up a ladder that only the bard (and one other?) was able to climb. Shlackton looked into a birdbath-sized dish, which was like a looking glass into another place. He saw a room, and a cloaked figure became aware of him, and suddenly the image went dark.

They recovered Clarice’s possession from the secret treasure room, as well as other treasures. Mission accomplished! But the PCs were not done. They explored some side passages, and in one they found a blind goblin who was fleeing in panic. Only the smallest PCs were able to go deeper in the passage. It led to a large cavern, mostly taken up by an underground lake. In the middle of the lake they saw a tiny island. As they approached the water’s edge, a bizarre creature rose from the water and hovered above. It’s name was Zhong guo ren. It didn’t like the dwarf Arno very much, but agreed to “trade” with the PCs if they entertained him. They did, and traded one of their magic items for the Harp on the lake’s island.

The PCs returned back to Clarice’s farm, full of treasure and experience. She asked them to take her heirloom – a crystal – to an associate of hers who lived in the south. They agreed. Thus ended Session #2.

Session #1: Twas a Week B4 Cmas
it rhymes, most of the time

Twas a week before Christmas,
In 2011,
When they rolled up some characters,
It was D&D heaven.

The former DM
was passing the torch.
No longer a human,
He’s now Arno the dwarf!

The table was stacked,
with all manner of food,
Till she smashed the table good,
Because she’s Magnatrude!

On the rooftop they heard
The pitter patter of feet.
Is it Santa or reindeer?
No, it’s Sparkles McPhee!

Then down from the chimney
Fell party member fourth.
A bard, with his harp,
Call him Shlackton, of course!

Fifth but not last,
in this world most like Tolkien,
is a newcomer to d&d,
Let’s welcome Elkin!

Now the party is gathered,
their stats have been rolled.
With backpacks and bedrolls,
The Gang hits the road!
